Bruins hire new Defensive Coordinator

Dan Nickles – Defensive Coordinator

Dan Nickles returns to Bartlesville for his second stint as the Bruins defensive coordinator after five successful years coaching defense at the 6A-I level.  Nickles comes to Bartlesville with 24 years of football coaching experience. Nickles spent the 2019 season as the defensive coordinator at Yukon where he helped the Millers hand district champion Edmond Santa Fe its lone district loss.

The previous four seasons (2015-18), Nickles coached linebackers and coordinated the defense at Jenks High School under Hall of Fame Coach Allan Trimble. His first year with the Trojans was a golden one as Jenks captured the 6A-I State Championship. The next two seasons Nickles roamed the sideline with current Bartlesville head coach Jason Sport as Jenks finished both years in the semi-finals. Nickles final season with the Trojans concluded with a narrow defeat in the 6A-I State title game.

Nickles first stint as the defensive coordinator at Bartlesville lasted two seasons (2013-14). The Bruins had a .500 record in his first year, the last season before 6A split. In his second season with Bartlesville his defense helped the Bruins earn a playoff berth that ended in the quarterfinals.

Coach Nickles spent 13 seasons (2000-12) at Verdigris High School before his first stretch in Bartlesville. Nickles served as the Cardinals head football coach and assistant athletic director for his last 9 seasons in Verdigris. Nickles is the all-time winningest football coach in the history of Verdigris High School and is one of the few Oklahoma high school football coaches to lead a team to 8 playoff appearances in his first 9 years as a head coach. Nickles compiled 70 wins, three 10-win seasons, and led the Cardinals to the 2nd round of the playoffs on five occasions.

Prior to his tenure at Verdigris, Nickles served as the defensive coordinator for two seasons (1998-99) at Kellyville high school and coached linebackers at Haskell College in Lawrence Kansas.  .

Nickles, 49, received his bachelor’s degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS where he was also an All-Conference safety. He and his wife,
